Therapeutic Ultrasound (TUS) for Plugged Ducts & Mastitis

Breastfeeding is a beautiful bonding experience for mom and baby and being able to pump to provide breast milk is a wonderful gift. But when plugged ducts occur it can lead to discomfort and pain for mom and frustration for baby when milk flow is impacted. We have a wonderful new service offering to help provide relief and resolve plugged ducts with therapeutic ultrasound.

A plugged duct feels like a lump within your breasts under the skin where inflammation of the milk duct has caused ductal narrowing leading to a blockage of milk and reduction of milk flow. The area may even look red or feel warm to the touch.

Plugged ducts can be caused by frequent missed feedings, baby starting to sleep longer stretches at night, poor latching, breasts not being completely emptied by breastfeeding or pumping, or tight fitting bras. A plugged duct can result in the slowing of milk flow leading to a baby that is frustrated at the breast or mastitis if the plugged duct is not quickly resolved.

Therapeutic ultrasound (TUS) is a non-invasive treatment using sound waves that create vibrations deep in the breast tissue along with gentle heat to provide relief from a blocked duct. This method stimulates blood supply to the affected area and encourages soft tissue healing, which aids in decreasing the size of the clog and promoting increased milk flow. 

During your treatment, the ultrasound will be placed gently over the problematic area with the blocked duct. Gentle warm pressure will be applied while moving the ultrasound toward the nipple.

It is highly recommended to breastfeed or pump the treated breast after the treatment to help release the clog, fully drain the breast, and reduce the symptoms of the plugged duct. For severe or recurrent plugged ducts, additional treatment sessions may be recommended.

The treatment is not painful and has been used to successfully treat sprained ankles, tendonitis, muscle strains and tears as well.
